Does the HCG diet work? This is not an uncommon question, especially from those looking for rapid weight loss. This day and age people are surrounded by many, many choices, as far as diets and exercise are concerned, and the ones that provide the quickest, easiest results are often the ones most sought after. Many who follow the HCG diet report rapid weight loss and are able to keep it off through ongoing exercise and proper nutrition.

The “HCG” in HCG diet stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and is produced by pregnant women. Dr. Simeons, the specialist who discovered the relationship between HCG and weight loss, holds the theory that HCG and a low calorie diet can trigger fat loss in the body. This theory is supported by those who lose as much as 20-30 pounds in an average of 30 days while taking HCG supplements. The fat loss is guided by the hypothalamus, a gland in the brain that regulates the autonomic processes of the body.

Autonomic process is the functions in your body that happen on their own, such as heart beat, breathing and digestion. The fat that’s stored in your body is released into the blood stream by the hypothalamus, allowing it to be utilized by the body for energy. This is where the low calorie diet comes into play. The reason that the daily caloric intake on the HCG diet is so low is to ensure that as few calories as possible come from outside sources (food and drink). With such a small source of food being eaten each day, the body is then forced to use the fat (now available in the blood stream thanks to the hypothalamus) to fuel itself.

Another testament to the efficacy of the HCG diet is the sheer number of people who have found out for themselves “does the HCG diet work?” It’s been around for a lot longer than you may realize, having first been discovered in the early 1950s. Since then, decades of research has been done on the effects of HCG and it’s relationship to weight loss. During that time, thousands of people have successfully lost weight using Dr. Simeons’ discovery.

It’s important to note, though, that simply following a very low calorie diet without the assistance of HCG is not recommended. The HCG works by stimulating the hypothalamus to release fat into the blood stream to be used as energy. As such, the body is able to keep moving along, not realizing that it’s energy intake has been drastically reduced. Without the effect of the HCG, a low calorie diet will be unsustainable and dangerous, possibly leading to a host of adverse effects to your health.

Those who have followed the HCG diet notice dramatic weight loss beginning in the first day on the program. Some have reported to have lost as much as 1lb per day -an amazing rate of weight loss! Everyone’s body is different though, and similar results may not be enjoyed by each individual. Plus, like all supplements and medications, there will always be an outlier who may not respond to HCG. The HCG Diet Plan Procedures

The HCG diet protocol is a specialized diet plan that helps people lose weight fast. The first HCG diet protocol was outlined by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons in his book: Pounds and Inches, though several others, each one slightly different, have been developed over the years. HCG is a hormone known as human Chorionic Gonadotropin and is produced by pregnant women. While studying the effects of HCG as a fertility supplement back in the 1950s, Dr. Simeons noticed that several of his subjects reported experiencing weight loss. Prompting further study, Dr. Simeons noticed that while taking HCG in conjunction with a low calorie diet, rapid weight loss resulted. While Dr. Simeons HCG diet protocol is available in full within the pages of his book, it can also be found online on HCG diet forums and other websites related to the HCG diet.

The Protocol consists of 23 injections of the HCG hormone. During the first two days, a person following the HCG diet is to undergo a period of “forced feeding.” Basically, as many fatty, high calorie foods as possible are to be consumed during this time in an effort to create stores of fatty tissue that are consumed over the course of the remainder of the diet. This period is often referred to as “forced feeding” because in order to store the necessary amounts of fatty tissue to last through the following days, a person is encouraged to eat far more than they would in a typical day. Eating more calories than the body needs is what causes it to store extra fat.

After the initial two day period of “forced feeding”, a 500 calorie a day diet is followed along with daily injections of the HCG hormone. HCG causes the hypothalamus to release stores of fat into the blood stream to be burned as energy. The reason this phase consists of so few calories is to ensure that the maximum amount of energy comes from the burning of fat, not on the calories that you eat. The 500 calorie HCG diet plan is followed for the next three weeks, and for three days after the injections cease.

During this phase of the HCG diet protocol, a very specific list of foods is available and it’s important not to stray from it. Certain foods can reduce the weight loss effect, and should be avoided. Each meal is described in detail, however, small changes can be made based on personal preference provided that the substitutions all come from the list of approved foods.

Once the 500 calorie period is over, dieters are encouraged to gradually increase the amount of calories they consume in a day, being careful to avoid sugar (including very sugary fruits) and grains. After three weeks have passed, grains are to be slowly reintroduced into the diet in small amounts.

Exercise is not recommended while on the HCG diet protocol due to the fact that people are taking in so few calories to begin with. Burning extra calories on top of what your body already needs in order to provide energy for its daily functions can make such a low calorie diet very difficult (if not impossible) to maintain. After the 500 calorie phase, though, exercise is encouraged in order to maintain the weight loss.

What are the HCG Side Effects?

As is commonly stated, before beginning any new exercise program or diet, you should take the time to consult your doctor; as well as do adequate research yourself to understand the journey ahead.

HCG is the abbreviation for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. This is a hormone that is found in women during pregnancy, more accurately, right after conception. HCG is detected in the mother’s bloodstream approximately 11 days after conception and then can be detected in the mother’s urine after about 4 or 5 more days.

The first requirement – and most important – is that you will have to introduce this “weight loss” miracle supplement into your diet. Hcg is most commonly found in the form of injection; however, you may also find it as an oral supplement, which seems to be the safest option.

Moving forward, let’s snip the red tape and make a conscious effort to understand the possible negative HCG  side effects,  as certainly at this point you likely already have a keen awareness to the positive side effects.

Inadequate Nutrition

While taking the hCG injection or liquid, it is mandatory that you remain on a VLCD (Very Low Calorie Diet). This meaning that your calorie consumption will be in the range of between 500 and 700 calories, per day. When calories are severely restricted to this extent, you could place yourself in danger of lacking iron, Vitamin B-12 and potassium. The deficiency of these vital nutrients can set the stage for metabolic decreases, reduced oxygen transportation, improper functioning of the liver, and improper conversion of glucose to glycogen.


Headaches have been reported as a common problem for hCG dieters. This is typically due to fighting fatigue while on the VLCD. Blood sugar can begin to rise and you may find yourself “crashing” more often than on any other regular day.

Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome

Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome (OHSS) may cause symptoms of stomach and pelvic pain, swollen hands and legs, nausea, diarrhea, and inability to urinate normally. This is known to occur in women as the result of taking hormone medications, in this case being hCG. In most cases, you will begin to recognize this condition in about 10 days from when you begin taking the medication.

Future Weight Gain

When calorie consumption is greatly reduced for a period of time, your metabolism begins to slow down. Furthermore, after the hCG Phase II cycle is complete you will be allowed to return to a higher calorie lifestyle. Future weight gain can be prevented if, and only if, you follow Dr. Simeons plan precisely. It’s imperative that you do not return to your old eating habits and be sure to follow a healthy meal plan and exercise routine after coming off of the hCG. Otherwise, you WILL gain weight and you will likely gain rebound weight.


If you have decided to take the hCG via injections it is vitally important that you understand the risk of blood clotting. Blood clots can be terminally dangerous, and it is common to be unaware of their formation. If you are certain you will be taking the injections, it is best to have it completed by your doctor or physician.

It is reasonable to question and have concerns about starting the hCG diet; but if you are well-informed and take the proper steps in educating yourself you will be knowledgeable and know what to look for. Follow Dr. Simeons plans as prescribed and you’ll be a happier, healthier you in no time!

Exercise for the HCG Diet

The hCG Diet was created for the purpose of achieving abundant fat loss results, over a short period of time. It was developed in a way that makes exercise not a requirement as compared to the vast majority of other weight loss programs. In fact, it is claimed that exercise may even stall weight loss while on the hCG Diet.

However, some level of activity is needed to maintain a healthy outlook and to keep us energized. It is also not unreasonable for one to desire a shapelier and better toned physique while continuing to trim fat off of their body. Unfortunately, weight loss alone will not sculpt and shape your trouble spots. With that being said, enlisting a well-groomed walking exercise routine may be just your answer, if this is a concern of yours.

Walking can be commonly overlooked as a viable source for exercise, but when modified, it can certainly act as a body-sculpting miracle. Modified walking exercises can help you achieve firming and toning of the muscles; specifically, common problem areas such as the thighs, hips, stomach and arms.

So get outside and enjoy the spring time weather and try these moderate exercises to aid in your weight loss endeavor!

For toned thighs

Hit the hills or step on a treadmill and set an incline. You need be walking uphill. Walk at a brisk pace, taking long steps with very little bend in your knees.

  • Be sure to keep you stomach sucked in; and your core tight.
  • Your shoulders should be rolled back and straight.
  • You can also work your inner and outer thighs by walking sideways, but it is recommended to do this on a lesser incline.

Flat, tight stomach

To work your lower belly, walk downhill; taking very small, fast steps.

  • Always remember to keep your core tight and your stomach flexed and sucked in.
  • Your shoulders need to be back and straight.

Slimmer, sleeker arms

This can be incorporated into any walking routine – swing your arms up freely as you are walking.

  • Flex and tighten your arms as they swing back and forth.
  • Don’t forget to keep your shoulders rolled back.

Slimmer waistline

Walk at a medium pace with your hands reaching for the sky.

  • Your arms should remain straight.
  • Again, shoulders rolled back; maintain perfect posture.

Remember, exercise may be implemented into your hCG Diet journey as long as you use care and caution. Since calorie consumption is restricted to VLCD and you will only be taking in approximately 500 calories each day, you will need the energy from the nutrients you are consuming to keep you satisfied and keep you functioning.

Consider all of the positive effects walking and other activities have on your mind, your body and your health. Also remember, if you do your walking outside in the sun, you will not be able to wear sunscreen with any oils, as this may also negatively impact the effects of the hCG.


Uses of HCG Hormone in Losing Weight

A common question that has surfaced in relation to the hCG diet, its side effects and its compatibility with other prescription medications, is whether or not women dieters may continue taking their birth control medication. As with most diets, it is not unreasonable for these questions and concerns to arise.

There are many restrictions that you must adhere to while following the hCG diet protocol and there are many medications that will negatively interfere with the diet. However, if you are a women dieter who does not wish to become pregnant, you may find relief in knowing that, yes; you may continue your birth control pill, patch, device, or any other method. There is no evidence showing that birth control of any form can negatively impact the ability to lose weight while on the diet.

Additionally, if you are a woman not wishing to become pregnant, it will be critical for you to continue taking your birth control medication. hCG is a fertility medication used for unfertile mothers. Fertility specialists prescribe hCG to women who are unable to conceive on their own. Therefore, taking the hCG drops or injections may increase your likelihood to become pregnant and there are many women who have. These prescriptions given by fertility specialists are however, in far larger doses, but the possibility still remains true.

Furthermore, keep in mind that hCG is a hormone produced in women, only during the early stages of pregnancy. Because of this, it is possible for you to produce a positive pregnancy test, even though you may in fact, not be pregnant. The most common pregnancy tests are designed to detect the levels of hCG in your bloodstream or urine, among the testing of other things. However, generally, the amount of hCG you take during the diet is not enough to trigger a positive pregnancy test, as the drops and injections are diluted, though it is possible. The dilution factor in the drops is usually high enough to be untraceable in the urine or bloodstream.  Unless you are taking pure hCG, which is usually only in the form of injection, it is unlikely you will produce a false positive pregnancy test. Most common hCG drops are not prescription grade.

It is also a common occurrence to experience similar symptoms as those related to pregnancy while on the hCG Diet. These symptoms may include nausea (morning sickness), diarrhea, fatigue, hunger and headaches.

If a positive pregnancy test is taken and there is a possibility you could be pregnant, discontinue your participation in the program immediately and see your doctor right away. The restrictive calorie intake that is required on the diet can adversely affect the health of the unborn baby.
